What's Inside: The Four Systems That Make Habits Stick
System #1: Time, Energy & Money System
Are you focusing on something where you don't have the time, energy, and money to prioritize this habit right now? Your desire is there, but if it doesn't have the room to be a current priority in your life, then focus on what you can, to make it a priority as soon as possible.
System #2: The Habit System
There are 4 Aspects of a habit, from James Clear's Atomic Habits:
A. Cue
B. Craving
C. Routine
D. Reward
The importance of these habit aspects shift depending if the habit you're working on is one you want to make or break.
A major fault for habits you want to break, is not identifying all the cues...not just one.
For habits you want to make, you want to understand your rewards and move that reward to immediately after taking an action.
These might sound like common sense, yet so many people don't do these basic things, and end up having problems sticking with their habits.
System #3: The What, When, Where System
If you want to increase your odds, as research has shown, up to 90% of sticking to a habit, then you need to know three things:
1. Know exactly WHAT you'll actually be doing
2. Know WHEN you'll be doing it
3. Know WHERE you'll be doing it.
These become the basics of what you will logically need to do. Each week changes and shifts, just a little bit, and yet week by week, people don't take the 5 to 10 mintues they need to figure this out and stay on track.
System #4: The Stay On Track System
Don't quit at the first slip. This is about The 5 Levels of Standards.
Most people expect themselves to be at their peak, their best, at all times, leading to All-or-Nothing thinking. This System helps you break this mindset.
Build a real comeback plan by recognizing the patterns most likely to derail you. This is more than a lack of discipline or even planning, and starts to get to the heart of what causes you to stay off track when you slip up.
